When a 20×20 Island Booth Should Be Custom-Built (And When a Modular Kit Wins)

The question we get asked most often about a 20×20 island booth is some version of “should this be custom?” — and the honest answer is that about half the time it should not be.

A custom exhibit is the right call for a specific set of reasons. When those reasons are absent, a modular system does the same job for less money, ships lighter, arrives faster and can be reconfigured for next year’s smaller show. Buying custom without one of those reasons is the most common way exhibitors overspend at this size.

Here are the six tests we actually use.

1. Does the booth have to do something a wall cannot?

This is the strongest signal. Modular systems are extremely good at surfaces — walls, counters, headers, illuminated panels. They are not good at function that is specific to your product.

If your exhibit needs a working demo bay plumbed for water, a raised platform with a machine bolted to it, a closed meeting room with a door, an integrated product wall with load-bearing shelving at odd depths, or a display case built around one object — that is a custom conversation. Those requirements do not bend to a catalog part list.

If what you need is a big, bright, well-designed wall with a counter and a monitor, a modular system will get you there and you should let it.

2. How many different footprints will this exhibit have to live in?

A custom-built island is designed for one footprint. That is what makes it good — every dimension is deliberate. It is also what makes it expensive to own if your show calendar is not consistent.

Most exhibit programs are not consistent. A company doing four shows a year is frequently doing one 20×20, two 10x20s and a 10×10, and the finance question is not “what does the island cost” but “what does the year cost.”

A modular SEG system solves that with one purchase. 3. What does it weigh, and who is paying the drayage?

Custom builds are usually heavier. Wood, laminate, structural steel, and the crates required to protect them add up quickly, and drayage is billed by weight in hundredweight increments — every time, both directions, at every show.

An aluminum-and-fabric modular island at 20×20 can weigh a fraction of a comparable custom build. Over a four-show year that gap compounds into real money, and it is money that buys you nothing on the floor. This does not mean custom is wrong — it means weight has to be part of the design brief from day one, not discovered at the loading dock.

4. How much lead time do you genuinely have?

Custom fabrication runs on a design-approve-build-review cycle. Concept, revisions, engineering drawings, production, and ideally a pre-ship set-up so nobody discovers a problem in the hall. That takes months, not weeks, and the timeline is not compressible past a certain point without cutting the review step — which is the step that catches expensive mistakes.

Modular systems ship from stocked components. If your show is inside a tight window, that is often the deciding factor by itself, and there is no shame in it. A well-designed modular island that arrives on time beats a beautiful custom island that arrives on the second day of the show.

5. Is the brand requirement about form, or about finish?

This one separates a lot of cases. Sometimes “we need it custom” means the booth has to be a shape that does not exist — a curved arc, a cantilevered header, an asymmetric structure that reads as architecture rather than as an exhibit. That is form, and it is a real custom requirement.

More often it means the graphics have to be exact: precise color match, edge-to-edge imagery, no visible seams, illuminated at a specific brightness. That is finish, and modern SEG systems handle finish extremely well. A silicone edge graphic in an aluminum frame is seamless by design, and a backlit lightbox panel gives you a level of color saturation that printed vinyl on a hard wall simply cannot.

That single decision often takes a 20×20 from over budget to on budget with no visible difference from the aisle.

6. Is the 20×20 island booth an asset or an expense?

A custom island that will be used for five years across a stable show calendar is an asset, and it should be evaluated on cost per show over its life. A custom island built for one flagship show, with no plan for what happens to it afterwards, is an expense wearing an asset’s clothing.

Ask the uncomfortable version of the question early: where is this stored between shows, who refurbishes it, and what happens when the brand refreshes in two years? If the honest answer is “we have not thought about it,” that is an argument for a modular structure with replaceable graphics — because then a rebrand costs you new fabric, not a new booth.

The hybrid answer most 20×20 island booths actually land on

In practice, the best 20×20 islands we build are rarely purely one thing. They are a modular structural spine — SEG frames, backlit panels, standard counters — with two or three genuinely custom elements where the booth has to do something specific: a fabricated demo station, a custom reception desk, a hanging structure built to a shape the catalog does not offer.

That gets you the design distinctiveness where visitors actually notice it, and the cost, weight and reconfigurability of a modular system everywhere they do not.

Before you decide: three things to have in hand

  1. Your two-year show calendar with footprints. Not just this show. The whole list, with the space size for each.
